Big City

(written by Carolyn Green)

The lyrics:

Molly turned the page and then she drained her cup. And so to flag the waitress she just raised it up, smiled at the woman who came to bring the refills free. Molly had seen her face so many times before. And as she walked away back to the kitchen door, Molly got to thinking that she didn’t know her name.

But it’s a big city here, and everyone’s got lives and the faces keep changing like the change of the tides. So just leave a big tip, go on home. Maybe it’s just as well left alone.

But Saturday morning she was there again, with the refill coffee and that crooked grin. Molly caught her eye and said, “I’d like to know your name.” “Well, my name is Margaret, ain’t it cold today?” “You must be from the south,” she heard Molly say. “Everyone I seem to meets from somewhere else.” And Margaret said,

“Yes, it’s a big city here, and everyone’s got lives and the faces keep changing like the change of the tides. So I work all day, I go to school and then home, cook a T.V. dinner and eat alone.”

Well, Molly go thinking ‘bout her family and friends, the fellowship and places she’d been, the people she could call on the phone, rarely ever feeling alone.

Molly stammered, “I’m just a block away and maybe if you’re free or on the holiday, you could meet my husband and my cat and I’ll bake you scones.”

“Cause it’s a big city here and everyone’s got lives and the faces keep changing like the change of the tides, but I want to hear of your story. You know a lot, I can tell. And it’s flat # 1 if you ring the bell. Cause it’s a big city here and everyone’s got lives and the faces keep changing like the change of the tides. So come on by, we’ll leave the light on at home, cause the city is dark if you’re all alone.”
